Wisdom Tooth Surgery
Wisdom Tooth Surgery
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to emerge in the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. For many people, there isn’t enough space for these teeth to grow properly, which can lead to pain, infection, and other dental problems. Wisdom tooth surgery involves the safe removal of these teeth when they become impacted, infected, or cause crowding.
Why wisdom teeth cause problems
When wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to erupt, they may grow at an angle, only partially emerge, or remain trapped under the gum. This can result in pain, swelling, gum infections (pericoronitis), tooth decay in neighboring teeth, or even damage to surrounding teeth and bone. In some cases, wisdom teeth can also cause crowding and shifting of other teeth, affecting the overall alignment of your smile.
When is wisdom tooth surgery needed?
Not everyone requires wisdom tooth removal, but surgery may be recommended if problems arise. Persistent pain or swelling in the back of the mouth, difficulty opening the mouth or chewing, repeated gum infections, or damage such as cysts affecting nearby teeth are common signs that removal may be necessary. Early evaluation with X-rays and dental check-ups helps detect these issues in time and determine whether extraction is the right option.
The procedure
Wisdom tooth surgery is a routine procedure performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the case. The dentist or oral surgeon carefully removes the tooth, cleans the area, and stitches it if required. Most patients are able to go home the same day and recover within a week or two with proper care.
Recovery and aftercare
After surgery, some swelling, discomfort, and mild bleeding are normal. Following post-operative instructions—such as resting, applying ice packs, eating soft foods, and keeping the area clean—helps speed up recovery. Pain relief medication and antibiotics may also be prescribed if needed.
